MSI Ex600 with Snow Leopard

September 17th, 2009 Posted in Mac OS X, snow leopard

I manage to install Snow Leopard on my laptop using chameleon bootloader package Chameleon_v1012.pkg, after many tuttorials that i’ve seen and having difficulties to boot from the laptop harddisk, so i found a trick, using this the tutorial to install from the following page How to install Snow Leopard 10A432 on a PC the guide is in italian language, after installing it because i wanna use my old partition types that were booting using MBR, i used a custom OSInstall.mpkg for MBR install, google is your friend, and at the and EasyBCD helped on adding Snow Leopard on the vista bootloader that i was using, copying the boot file from the tutorial doing a rename and putting it in the NST directory on C drive, that is used for booting OS, for  Neogrub from EasyBCD, having name .efi and then at last you can enjoy Snow Leopard from your harddisk partition, so i think i have to delete the install of Snow Leopard on my external harddrive.
QuicktimeX is a perfect application used with my laptop camera i can record a movie with it, system now is using the both 2 cores that my processor has so i glad i can use it at maximum, and it’s faster, has also support for booting in 64 bit mode,  well now i even like it more.

    Hi.

I have tried to install osx on my EX600 several times and my computer always stops with “Still waiting for root device” info.

How did you manage to install OSX ?
    Where is the trick?

I have tried with iDeneb 1.2 (10.5.6) and have latest BIOS from MSI download page installed.

    regards
    cantos

same problem i had,but with iDeneb 10.5.5,but to fix it i use:
    booting from DVD press F8
at prompt just type -s then use what it says the 2 lines :
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /

    then type
    exit
and graphical starts use disk utilities and i see my hard drive with all partition.
This should work also for you.

    Hi,

I followed this guide to install Snow Leopard on my EX600. I tried other guides, but this is the best working one. But I only can start with -x flag.

Which kexts do you use? Does audio and wlan work?

    regards
    Drunkan

  4. admin Says:

-x means safe mode so no sound
    kext from here http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?imwit1wj2zw

    try boot
    -v -f
    and see the errors

    Hi,

finally it works but strangely only with MBR. Did you get WIFI and more important the GPU working? I have a Nvidia 8400M G, I tried with NVInject and EFI String. Which card do you have?

  6. admin Says:

WiFi no,the driver is on the good way http://code.google.com/p/iwidarwin/ i’ve read that it detects unprotected wifi networks,
but i still wait the final ones, there are still bugs,as for GPU i have same card there isn’t much support for GPU on this card,
    i’ve used nvinject:
    Graphics by NVIDIA:

    Chipset Model: Graphics by NVIDIA
    Type: GPU
    Bus: PCIe
    PCIe Lane Width: x16
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: NVIDIA (0×10de)
    Device ID: 0×0428
    Revision ID: 0×00a1
    ROM Revision: NVinject 0.2.1
    Displays:
    Display:
    Resolution: 1280 x 800
    Pixel Depth: 32-Bit Color (ARGB8888)
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Rotation: Supported
    Display Connector:
    Status: No Display Connected

for the card with full GPU support:

Actually my GPU is recognized. System Profiler shows the samle like yours. But the GPU isn’t really active. I even cannot open a simple picture. As Thumbnail or Previes the pictures are displayed, but if I open them they disappear. I only can see the window and frame without picture. The same with videos. Really strange. I tried EFI String and different NVInjects but always the same, must be another problem.
Did you get your Snowy to run in 64 bit?

  8. admin Says:

For me the GPU seems to be active for the pictures the preview worked only after i installed nvinject 256M driver the one that i had used also for my ideneb 1.3,1.4.
Maybe your id video card is different from mine, but if ideneb 1.3 or 1.4 was working there should be no problem with snow leopard theoretical i am speaking about running in 32 bit mode, because in 64 bit mode i did not find drivers compiled for 64 bit mode, so i had to return to 32 bit mode with my old drivers that i had, working with no problems.
I have working photo and video all…make sure you are in 32 bit mode by setting in boot file the option, with 5 seconds timeout also you can do that using the following mac os x application: 32- or 64-bit Kernel Startup Mode Selector, use google.
On 32 bit mode can run also 64 bit mode programs, that the old video drivers should work, for me nvinject for 256M.

    Hi all.

I’m going to try to install SL into LG E500, wich is like MSI Ex600:

    Intel T7100 1.8 GHz
    2 GB RAM
    160 GB HD
    nvidia 8400M GS

Can you tell me if it’s like your Ex600? And if it’s possible, how to:

    Install nvinject 256?
Install wireless drivers? (If it works fine)

Are you update to 10.6.2 without errors?

    Thanks.

  10. Chencho Says:

    Hi all.

    I install finally snow leopard.

But i need to use chameleon and match_kernel.test7 to boot propertly.

Nvidia works at 1024×768 and 32 MB, instead 256.

Wireless dont work, and “mac key” (as windows key) too :(

    Any tip?

  11. Chencho Says:

nvidia works with iHackintosh Nvidia Installer 3.0 Beta Version by Punk92

But using this kexts i have not support to keyboard and mouse (trackball)

  12. Chencho Says:

Sorry for the continuos replies :(
nvidia works only with 128 MB :(
match_kernel dont boot, i need to use match_kernel.test7

Into kexts i need to add PS2 to use laptop touchpad/keyboard

Any way to give nvidia with 256 MB and atheros wifi?

  13. admin Says:

it should work nvinject 256M if you have 256M nvidia 8400M GS
Install wireless drivers there are some issues with atheros are working only those networks that are not asking passwords
i did not upgrade to 10.6.2 i am using 10.6.1

  14. admin Says:

you must first see how did you boot are you using 32 bit or 64 bit in snow leopard
for wireless there are some drivers for atheros wifi you must check if you may have same version you find them using google mac os x atheros driver

  15. admin Says:

you can try VoodooPS2Controller try on google
and may also try all voodoo controllers but be careful because some of them are in conflict
with others kext from Apple that have to be removed read all post on them

  16. admin Says:

your video card has 256 MB dedicated RAM or just 128 MB
for kexts check voodoo controllers on chameleon website

  17. Chencho Says:

    Hi!

I’m wrong, and my nvidia have 128 MB. Animations are a bit slow, maybe it’s caused by Quartz.

    Sound works. Mic front not.

Atheros… dont work; all in over net is about leopard or tiger :’( Now i’m using a conceptronic, but dont like this solution.

I update to 10,6,2 without problem. But i still boot with match_kernel.test7

    PS2 works fine.

And i have a issue with keyboard. “windows key”, wich need to work like command, are mapped to “alt gr”. And “alt gr” works like command key.

  18. Chencho Says:

    Any tip to activate QE/CI?

I try with nvinject with no success.

Now adding to com.apple.Boot.plist the nvidia stings, but nothing works.

are you sure that it’s not enabled allready, beacause in snow leopard it’s diffrent that
from leopard try to check it by:

    1st Method

This is the easiest method of all time. All you have to do is run Chess application. Fire it up and play chess. Now if you are able to move the piece . Congraluations , hardware acceleration (QE/CI) is working.

If you aren’t pleased or if you do want to check if it really works. I’ve included other alternative methods. Do continue to read

    2nd Method

Check if screensaver works. Its fairly simple to do. All you have to do is go to System preferences and then select Desktop and Screen saves. Select Screen savers tab and do test out a screensaver. If you see a blank screen , it means that your Graphics acceleration is not working !

    3rd Method

Test out Dashboard (Press F12) (or F3 if you’re using Apple Aluminium Slim Keyboard). Drag and drop a widget . If you see a ripple-like effect (or cool effects) when you add a widget. Congratulations everything is working

There are other ways to test as well for instance running DVD Player. Downloading and playing mac games such as Neverball.

    4th Method (thanks to iHack)

Try Front Row. If Front Row works , QE/CI is in place , otherwise it wouldn’t work at all !
